WHEAT RESEARCH PROGRAMME

Salient Features of "LOK -1" :

w Other varieties of Wheat takes 110 to 115 days while "LOK-1" takes only 105 days to get maturity. Thus there is a saving of one irrigation...
w "LOK-1" gives 6 to 8% more yield than other newly developed varieties in Central Zone. The average yield of wheat per hector is 32 quintal in country. "LOK-1" has given 34.5 quintal yield i.e.2.5 quintal more yield per hector.
w It is escape to rust.
w Protein value remains 9 to 13% in general varieties while "LOK-1" contains 13% proteins.
w The grain is large and attractive.
w "LOK-1" variety is used as a check variety in varietial trial in Central, Western and Eastern plain Zones.
w The demand of Breeder seed of v in the country has increased as under:

Year "LOK-1" Quintal Sonalika Quintal
1984 - '85 178 2120
1994 - '95 570   393
2001 - '02 790   075

After "LOK-1" new other varieties are being tested at State and National Level.
LOK-45 is indentified as best variety in Peninsular Zone ( i.e. Maharastra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu) "LOK-45" is qualitatively improved as Protein value is 14.67 %.

New 10 varieties have been placed in initial plant Pathological screening Nursery, and National intial Varietial

Lok Bharti has developed a variety of Wheat which has exceptionally Bold Grains. The weight of 1000 Grains is 95 to 100 Grams while that of Kalyansona is 40 Grams and "LOK-1" – 55 Grams. The Nobel Laureate Dr. Borlaug had said that such a biggest seet is not evolved up till now in the world and I have seen such a large seed. I.C.A.R. has promised LOK Bold as donor Gene variety as identified in National Nursery.

LOK-1 stands second inthe demand of breeder seeds in India. In 2002/03 International Wheat bred Nursery is alloted to Lok Bharti under which 543 varieties were planted on the campus.

Future Plans

w Our aim is to evolve a variety which may mature in 95 to 100 days. At present most varieties are being matured in 105 to 120 days. Our effort is to reduce the days of maturity by 10 to 12 days without decreasing the yield thus the famers can have the efficient use of the land.

w New variety may give more yield i.e. 10 to 12 % than "LOK-1".

w The less Stamp wood and more food” concept is to be achieved by lessening the requirement of irrigation, fertilizer and soil elements.

w “Nutrition value like Protein, Lycin may also be more than other varieties.
